Xylia Hart the 14-Year Old With D.I.D

This story is about a 14-year-old who has D.I.D. (Dissociative Identity Disorder). There are a lot of people who think people who have D.I.D. are faking or are just trying to get attention, but that's not always the case. This story IS fictional. Please respect everyone's opinion and keep judgmental opinions to yourself, and remember, you don't know what people go through and you don't know their story. There will be facts about D.I.D just to give you an idea of how D.I.D “works” in a way and what it feels like to have D.I.D, again, everyone feels things differently so anything said about D.I.D is not what WILL happen, it may be a possibility, but please talk to your doctor and ask to get tested if you think you do have D.I.D. Now, on to the story! I hope you enjoy it!

What IS D.I.D.?

D.I.D. or dissociative Identity disorder which was also previously called Multi Personality Disorder is when a person goes through trauma that their personality ends up “shattering” making more personalities or “alters”. D.I.D. is not curable, but you can treat it with the correct medication. D.I.D. is chronic and can last years or even be a lifelong illness. Some symptoms that come with D.I.D. are anxiety, depression, self-puzzlement, disordered eating, self-destructive behavior, substance misuse, memory gaps, suicidal thoughts, or self-harm.

People with D.I.D. may sometimes not feel “normal” or like they don't fit in, having D.I.D. is a rare psychiatric disorder and only about 1.5% of the global population has it. Some may experience depersonalization making them feel like they’re living a dream or they’re cut off from their body. A dissociative episode may feel like you’re disconnected from yourself and the world. Alters normally have a difference in speech, manners, attitudes, thoughts, and gender orientation.

Types of Alter Personality (Parts) in Dissociative Identity Disorder:

No particular types of alter are needed for a DID diagnosis, most people will only recognize a few types. Some people with DID may not recognize and, or may have types not listed. Types of alters depend on what each person needed to survive.

Story:

Xylia was born in the United States but moved to Germany when she turned two years old, her mom had passed about a year after she was born. Since she moved, Xylia has always been curious as to why they moved, even though she had heard the story multiple times she still always wanted to hear it again. Xylia’s dad told her the story again and how she had been diagnosed with D.I.D. at the age of ten, even though when she was first diagnosed she didn't know what D.I.D was or how to deal with it or manage it Xylia always knew she had her family and friends to rely on for help. As Xylia got older she got as used to having D.I.D. as she could even though it was a challenge and difficult to deal with. Xylia always had to take pills and different kinds of medicine to treat her D.I.D, and she knew there wasn't a cure for her condition but as long as she took her pills when she had to she knew she’d be ok.

One day when Xylia was doing homework for a class she thought back on how her dad told her the story about why they moved, so she decided to do some more research on D.I.D. As she started to do research she noticed that there was a lot that her dad left out about her having D.I.D. She started writing things down in a book she kept hidden from her dad and continued to act normal. One day while her dad was at work she went into his office and started looking through his papers trying to find any about her having D.I.D, she found one paper that said she was diagnosed at ten with D.I.D, so she continued to look through her dads’ stuff until she heard the car pull up, she quickly put everything the way it was before and went back to working on her homework. As soon as she sat down the front door opened to the house and her dad walked in. Her heart was racing as well as her thoughts. What was he hiding, she thought to herself.

A few days later Xylia had forgotten all about looking for any papers saying why she had D.I.D., she was focused more on school since she had upcoming tests and exams. One night while Xylia and her dad were eating dinner, her dad brought up the topic of her D.I.D., Xylia's heart dropped when she thought she had been caught going through her dad’s things. When Xylia's dad didn't mention anything about his office she relaxed a bit, she decided to ask him about her D.I.D again, Xylia's dad visibly stiffened and cleared his throat saying that she had already been told everything he knew, she knew he was trying to hide something. She tried asking again saying it was for a school project but her dad didn't budge, she decided to drop the topic and finish her food.

As the days went on Xylia decided to see if she could get some of her family members to tell her why she had D.I.D., when she asked them they seemed afraid to tell her anything, saying she should ask her dad and to leave them out of the drama. Xylia pleaded with them promising she wouldn't tell anyone that she asked, but they still didn't say anything. She was planning on giving up on ever finding out what happened to her when she was a child.
